It is in bewildering times like this that we look for answers, for signs of hope and for the inspiration to move on. Our psyches respond almost automatically by reading the signs and symbols that seem to appear, which serve as our only correspondence with the invisible and unknown. They seem to be links to and manifestations of a presence beyond us. Such signs and symbols have been heeded in every culture and every age. One of them is the butterfly.
They say that miracles and manifestations happen in the most unlikely places. In October 1997 I witnessed what I took to be a profound sign in what would appear to most people as the most unlikely of environments, a fashion show. At Donatella's invitation I went to Milan to document with my camera Donatella's first show, which was also Gianni's last. It was to be an end and a beginning, a true metamorphosis. It was a dramatic moment and I looked on in wonder, as did the rest of the fashion world. One can only imagine Donatella's state of mind. I recalled my own prayers and pleas for strength during times of crisis, and how in moments close to despair I have asked for a sign to guide me.
For four days I documented the fittings, the rehearsals and the show. The air was thick with trepidation. A large tent was being used as a dressing room and it was there that the strangest thing occurred. A single white butterfly appeared, gently fluttering around among us. I thought to myself "What is a butterfly doing here, now, in October in Milan?" Everyone noticed and everyone remained silent. I looked at Donatella and she looked at the butterfly. "That's Gianni looking over us", she said, smiling, and she continued with what she was doing."
